Love Is A Verb

When I was young I thought that love

Was just another noun

Like coffee cups or windowpanes

Or something carried ‘round

Love didn’t earn a capital like

A holiday or a town

It slid into your pocket and was

Simple to set down

But now I’m old enough to know that love

Is not so small

Four simple letters occupy a space

Consuming all

Emotions, thoughts or rationale will vanish

In the fall

And once you’re there you’ll fight to stay and

Weather any squall

But the size of love is nothing when compared to

Love’s true weight

There has never been a blessing or a challenge

Quite so great

Because to truly love someone means

Striving to create

A better world for someone else and leaving

Naught to fate

Loving you means wading into waters

Deep and dark

And holding out my hand in wait for

Yours to interlock

It means walking alongside you on any path

Which you embark

And fanning hope’s dark embers ‘til they

Blaze into a spark

I love you with a strength that I can’t fully

Put to words

But never fear, I will not rest until I

Am assured

That you’ve felt my love and seen my love and in it

Feel secured

And know that I will fight for you because my love

Is a verb
